We’re seeking a Part-Time Structural Sustainability Intern to join us in Portland from January – March 2024!
As an SE 2050 Signatory, Holmes is keen to dedicate more resources to intentional and strategic initiatives that will take immediate impact on the embodied carbon of our projects. We envision this Intern playing a huge role in this growth. The approximately 12-week internship will occur from January – March 2024, concluding with an intern presentation at an Energy Trust of Oregon hosted event in April 2024.
Ideal candidate qualifications include:
- Demonstrated interest and commitment to advancing sustainability in structural engineering.
- Articulated reason and rationale for interest in working at Holmes US.
- Personal background and committed interest in advancing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the industry.
- Completed three years towards a B.S. or enrolled in a M.S. Degree in Civil / Structural Engineering.
- Seismic-based design experience or education.
- Ability to work a minimum of 120 hours, approximately 10-15 hours per week, over the course of 12 weeks.
- Strong verbal communication skills, including listening, questioning, and ability to give presentations.
- Strong written communication skills, including report writing.
- Strong time management and problem-solving skills.
- Computer software skills: Intermediate MS Word, Advanced MS Excel, Beginner ETABS, SAP, Risa (or equivalent).
- Sound technical skills: understands structural engineering design principles.
- Team player: works well with project teams and has demonstrated examples of working collaboratively with others.
- Prior internship working in a structural engineering consultancy preferred.
Potential work may include the following:
- Learn the LCA tools Holmes uses (Tally and OneClick) and help us develop training for all staff.
- Develop BIM best practices of modelling for structural material quantity evaluation and LCA best practices that will be implemented firm wide. Coordinate this with our New Zealand (NZ) offices.
- Review past projects SMQs to develop company baselines.
- Work with project teams to help reduce project embodied carbon.
- Run LCAs for projects that would be submitted to the SE 2050 database.
- Develop simple LCA tools for staff to use on all projects.
- Concluding intern presentation at an Energy Trust of Oregon hosted event in April 2024.
